CHAP. 147.

commissioners, shall be filled by the board of county com-
missioners for the aforesaid county; the persons appointed
to such vacancies being however hereby required, before
they shall be competent to act, enter into bond, with sure-
ties and condition, and in penalty as prescribed by the se-
cond section of this act, in regard to the commissioners

To expire in
two years.

SEC. 6. And be it enacted, That this act, and all the
privileges, franchises and rights conferred hereby, shall
expire and cease to be exercised at the expiration of two
years, from and after the passage of this act.

An act to authorise Philip A. L. Contee, to introduce into
this State certain Negroes, slaves for life.
|

Authority to
introduce, &c.
|
Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Maryland,
That Philip A. L. Contee, of the State of Virginia, be
and he is hereby authorised to introduce into this Stale,
from the State of Virginia, the following negroes, slaves
for life, the property of the said Philip A. L. Contee, to
wit: Pompey, Bill, Gray, Thornton, Henry, junior; Ed-
mund, senior; Burtis, Abby, Hannah, Harriet, Arianna,
Maria, Delilah, Hethy, Martha, Julia, Thomas, Edmund,
junior; Bill Lloyd, Nace, Guy, Godfrey Landon, Lewis,
Richard, Hana, senior; Hana, junior; Abby, junior; Je-
mima, and her child; Joan, Caroline, Nelly Morris, Nelly

Provisoes.
|
Craig, Nancy and Attaway; provided, that the said Philip
A. L. Contee, shall within thirty days after the removal of
said slaves, or either of them, into this State, file with the
clerk of the county into which said negroes are introduced,
a list or lists of the said slave or slaves so removed, Ba-
ting their ages, with an affidavit thereto attached, that the
same is a true and faithful list or lists of the said slave or
slaves so removed, and that he the said Philip A. L. Con-
tee, hath not removed the said slave or slaves into this
State for the purpose of sale, and that each of the said ne-
groes is a slave for life; and provided also, that the sum of
fifteen dollars for each slave, between the ages of twelve
and forty-five years; and that the sum of five dollars for
each slave above the age of forty-five years, and under
twelve years of age, so brought into this State, shall be
paid to the clerk of the county court, at the time of giving
