CHAPTER 127.

An act for the protection of the People's Bridge, in Fred-
erick County, across the Monocacy, on the Road leading
from New Market to Buckeystown.

CHAP. 127.

1840.

SECTION 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of
Maryland, That from and after the passage of this act, it
shall and may be lawful for any justice of the peace in and
for the State of Maryland, (upon oath or affirmation, as
the case may be, ) to impose a fine on every person or
persons, not exceeding ten dollars for every offence, by
them or either of them committed, in cutting, defacing,
or in any manner wilfully injuring said bridge.

SEC. 2. And be it enacted, That it shall not be lawful
hereafter for any person or persons to drive any wagon,
cart, carriages of pleasure or vehicles of burden, nor to
ride on horse-back across said bridge, faster than a walk;
neither to drive across said bridge, at any one time, more
than one hundred sheep or hogs, nor a greater number
of horses or cattle, than twenty, at any one time, under
a penalty not exceeding five dollars for each offence.

SEC. 3. And be it further enacted, That it shall not,
after the passage of this act, be lawful for any person or
persons to lock the wheel or wheels of any wagon, car-
riage or any other wheeled vehicle whilst crossing said
bridge, under a penalty, not exceeding five dollars for

each offence; all fines and forfeitures aforesaid to be reco-
vered according to the provisions of the first section of
this act, and to be collected as small debts; one half in
each case to the informer, and the balance paid over for
the use of primary schools in Frederick county.
