or parcel of land, at or near the central situation se-
lected by the commissioners, and in case it should be
necessary, they are hereby empowered to condemn a lot
of land not exceeding one acre, for the purpose, of erect-
ing a good and substantial school house, suitable to the
present and prospective wants of the district, and for the

purpose of building such school house, they are author-
ized to receive contributions, and subscriptions from

well disposed persons, and to draw for any sum not
exceeding one hundred and fifty dollars, on the com-
missioners for St. Mary's county, who are hereby re-
quired to pay over the said amount to the trustees, or

their order, of any school district, as soon as they
shall have certified to them (the commissioners) that
such lot of land has been acquired and secured to them
and their successors in office, by a good and sufficient
deed, to be recorded as other deeds are, and a school
house erected thereon in compliance with the requisi-
tions of this act, and that at least fifty dollars have
been received, or guaranteed from other sources.

Prerequisites.

Sec. 5. And be it enacted, That the commissioners
for St. Mary's county, be, and they are hereby substi-
tuted for and invested with all the powers of the com-
missioners of the free school fund of St. Mary's coun-
ty, and the Treasurer of the Western Shore, is hereby
required to pay over to the said commissioners for St.
Mary's county, or to their order, annually, such pro-
portion of the school fund as said county may be enti-
tled to receive.

Sec. 6. And be it enacted, That the commissioners
of the free school fund of St. Mary's county, be, and
they are hereby required to deliver and pay over to
the commissioners for St. Mary's county, all their pa-

pers, books, accounts, and money, of which the sum
of two thousand dollars is hereby appropriated to the
purposes of this act, and the residue to be applied to
the education of poor children, for the present year
only as heretofore.

Sec. 7. And be it enacted, That it shall be the duty
of the trustees so appointed, to manage the concerns
of their respective school districts, keep in repair and
properly furnish the school houses, and to employ some
person of correct moral deportment and well qualified
and competent to teach the elementary branches of an
English Education, such as spelling, reading, writing,
