CHAP. LXXXIII.

Passed 20th of
January, 1808.

An ACT for the benefit of Catherine Johnson, of Charles
county.

Preamble.

WHEREAS Catherine Johnson, of Charles county, by her petition to this general assembly
hath set forth, that she is a widow with four children, and without the means of support,
except from her personal labour, which is arduous ard hard, and withal inadequate to the demands
of her family, and in addition to her poverty it hath pleased God to deprive one of her daughters of
the use of her lower extremities from the hips downwards, by which misfortune this child is debar-
red from obtaining a livelihood, and must either perish by famine or repair to the poor's house of the
said county, where her afflictions and infirmities would lose the attentions of a parent, which her
unhappy and helpless situation so much requires; and the prayer of the petitioner, that the levy,
court of the county in which she resides may levy a small sum of money to assist her labours in the
support of her numerous family, appearing reasonable, and the facts stated true, therefore,.

Court to levy
money, &c.

II. BE IT ENACTED, by the General Assembly of Maryland, That the levy court of Charles county
shall be and they are hereby directed and empowered, at their annual levy, to assess and levy on the
assessable property of said county, a sum of money not exceeding thirty dollars, for the support and,
maintenance of the said Catherine Johnson, and that the same be collected annually by the collectors,
of Charles county, and paid to such person as the levy court of said county shall or may direct.

CHAP. L XXXIV.

Passed 20th of
January, 1808.

An ACT authorising a lottery for raising a sum of money to build

a church in Charles county.

Preamble

WHEREAS it is represented to this general assembly, by the vestry of Port-Tobacco pa-
rish, in Charles county, and sundry, other citizens of said county, that the church belonging
to the said parish was blown down by a violent gust of wind, and is totally incapable of repair, and
that they are anxious to build a new one, but that they have not funds sufficient, and have prayed a
law to pass authorising them to raise by lottery a sum o£ money for that purpose; therefore,

A scheme may
be proposed,
&c.

II. BE IT ENACTED, by the General Assembly of Maryland, That it shall be lawful for the vestry of
the said church, or a majority of them, to propose a scheme of a lottery to raise such sum of money
as may be necessary, not exceeding three thousand dollars, and to sell and dispose of the tickets
therein, provided said vestrymen, or a majority of them, before the sale of any ticket or tickets in
said lottery, give bond to the state of Maryland, in the penalty of eight thousand dollars, conditioned
that they will well and truly apply so much of the money arising therefrom, within ten months after
the drawing thereof, as will pay the fortunate adventurers for prizes drawn by them in said lottery,
and the residue to the building of the said church and the defraying the necessary expenses incurred
in the management of the said lottery.

lodged, &c..

III. AND BE IT ENACTED, That the said bond shall be lodged in the clerk's office of Charles
county, to be there recorded, and upon such bond, or any office copy thereof, suit or suits may be
instituted against the obligors therein, or any of them, or their or any of their legal representatives,
for any breach or noncompliance with the condition of the same,

CHAP. LXXXV.

Passed 20th of
January, 1808.
Preamble.

An ACT for the relief of Anne Terry, of Kent county.,

WHEREAS the said Anne Terry, by her petition to this general assembly, hath prayed, that
a law may pass, authorising her to stop so much of the old road which leads from Turner's
creek cross roads to Turner's creek as runs through the corner of her field, and a number of the
citizens of said county, residing in the neighbourhood of said petitioner, have certified that they
are acquainted with the subject of said petition, and are of opinion that the same is reasonable, and
the prayer thereof ought to be granted; therefore,

Part of a road
may be stopped
up, &c.

II. BE IT ENACTED, by the General Assembly of Maryland, That the said Anne Terry be and she is
hereby authorised and empowered, to stop up so much of the old public road leading from Turner's
creek cross roads to Turner's creek as runs through the corner of her field, provided the new road,
which is now made and used, be made and laid down on, the said Anne Terry's land.
