CHAP. LXXXI.

1807.

An ACT to build a bridge and open a road in Caroline county.

WHEREAS it is represented to this general assembly, by the petition of sundry inhabitants of
Caroline county, that they labour under many inconveniencies for want of a bridge over a
branch of the North-West Fork river, at a place known by the name of The Old Bloomery, in said
county, and a road to lead from Douglass's mill across said bridge, until it intersects the main road
leading from the North-West Fork bridge to Marshahope bridge; and the prayer of the said petiti-
oners appearing reasonable, therefore,

January, 1808.
Preamble.

II. BE IT ENACTED, by the General Assembly of Maryland, That George Collins, Charles Ross and
James Houston, be and they are hereby appointed commissioners for the purpose of building and
completing a new bridge, at the same place where the old bridge now stands, over said branch, and
the said commissioners, or a majority of them, are hereby empowered to agree and contract with
any person or persons, upon the best, and cheapest terms they can, to finish and complete the said
bridge in a good, substantial and workman-like manner.

III. AND BE IT ENACTED, That the justices of the levy court of Caroline county be and they
are hereby authorised and directed, at their next annual session, to assess and levy on the assessable
property in said county, the sum of one hundred and fifty dollars current money, together with the
usual commissions for the collection thereof, which said sum of money shall be collected in the same
manner that other county charges are, and when collected as aforesaid shall be paid to the said com-
missioners, or a majority of them, or to their order, for the purpose of defraying the expenses of
building the said bridge.

IV. AND BE IT ENACTED, That the said commissioners, or a majority of them, are hereby au-
thorised and empowered to lay out, open and clear, a road, at the expense of the petitioners, or
any part of them particularly interested therein, or any other persons who may voluntarily offer
their assistance, not exceeding twenty-four feet in width, to commence at or near Douglass's mill
aforesaid, and to run from thence in the most convenient direction over the Old Bloomery aforesaid,
and through James Houston's lane, or by James Wright's mill, as the said commissioners, or a majori-
ty of them, may think most expedient, until it intersects the main road leading from the North-West
Fork bridge to Marshahope bridge; provided, that the said road shall not go through the garden,
yard, orchard or meadow, of any person or persons, without his, her or their consent.

V. AND BE IT ENACTED, That the said bridge when built and completed, and the said road when
opened, cleared and made good, shall be submitted to the view and inspection of 'two of the justices
of the peace of said county, who upon viewing and examining the said bridge and road, and finding
the same finished and completed agreeably to the provisions, true intent and meaning of this act,
shall give a certificate thereof, to be returned to the clerk of Caroline county court, to be there re-
corded, and shall for ever thereafter be deemed and taken as a public highway, and kept in repair in
the same manner as other public roads are in the said county.

CHAP. LXXXII.

Bridge, &c. to
be submitted,
&c.

An ACT to authorise and empower the levy court of Prince-George's
county to assess and levy a sum of money for the support and
maintenance of Thomas Gentel.

Passed 20th of
January, 1808.

WHEREAS it is represented to this general assembly, by the petition of Thomas Gentel, that
from disease and infirmities, incident to old age, he is rendered unable to obtain a livelihood
Ly labour, and praying that a law may pass authorising the levy court of Prince-George's county to
levy a sum of money on the assessable property of said county sufficient to afford him a comfortable
subsistence; and the facts stated in said petition appearing to true, therefore,

Preamble.

II. BE IT ENACTED, by the General Assembly, That the levy court of Prince-George's county
shall be and they are hereby directed and empowered, at their levy court annually, so long as they
shall see cause, to assess and levy on the assessable property of said county, a sum of money, not
exceeding thirty dollars, for the support and maintenance of the said Thomas Gentel, and that
the same be collected annually by the collector or collectors of Prince-George's county, and paid to
such person as the levy court of the said county shall or may direct.
