CHAPTER 187.

 

An act entitled, An act relating to Primary Schools of
Prince George's County.

Passed Feb.
24, 1843.

SECTION 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of
Maryland, That from and after the first day of June next,
the teachers employed to take charge of the Primary
Schools in Prince George's county, shall he paid a certain
fixed sum at the discretion of the board of trustees ap-
pointed by the Levy Court, to be rated either quarterly or
monthly, for each and every scholar admitted into said

school; provided, that no teacher shall receive for any one
year more than three hundred and fifty dollars nor less than
one hundred and fifty for his services.

Proviso.

SEC. 2. And be it enacted, That the trustees appointed
by the levy court under the provisions of the act of eigh-
teen hundred and thirty eight, to which this is a further sup-
plement, shall prescribe some mode to ensure the more re-
gular attendance of the scholars, and more strict accounta-
bility of teachers, and for this purpose they are authorized
to make such bye-laws and regulations for the more correct
government of the Primary Schools as they may in their
judgment think proper, and all such bye-laws and regulations
shall be binding on teachers, scholars and local trustees,
and the local trustees may expel any scholar for any time
not exceeding three months at one time, for bad conduct, and
also to exclude all children under seven years of age when-
ever they shall think it best to do so, and they may also
suspend for a limited time any scholar for irregular attend-
ance, until they receive assurance from the parent, guar-
dian or other person having charge of such scholar, that
the attendance will be more regular.

SEC. 3. And be it enacted, That each and every teach-
er of Primary Schools, shall keep a regular account of the
attendance of the scholars under his charge, and make re-
port thereof to the local trustees quarterly or oftener if they
require it.
SEC. 4. And be it enacted, That whenever the taxable
inhabitants or patrons of any school district shall neglect or
refuse to appoint or elect local trustees, agreeably to law,
on the first Saturday in May, the board of trustees appoint-
