CHAPTER 179.

CHAP. 179.

An act to elect the Commissioners of Tax of Carroll Coun-
ty, by the people.

16, 1843.

SECTION 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of
Maryland, That from and after the first Wednesday of
October next, the commissioners of tax, of Carroll county,
shall be elected by the people.

SEC. 2. Be it further enacted, That after the election of
commissioners as hereinafter provided, the board of com-
missioners of tax, of Carroll county, shall consist of five
persons.

SEC. 3. Be it further enacted, That the mode and
manner of electing commissioners of tax of Carroll county,
shall be as follows: the voters of said county qualified to
vote for members of the House of Delegates of Maryland,
shall at the annual general election for delegates to the ge-
neral assembly in the year eighteen hundred and forty-four,
vote for five persons possessing the qualifications now ne-
cessary for the office of commissioners.

SEC. 4. Be it further enacted, That the judges of
the election for each election district, or a majority of them,
shall certify and return in a form and manner similar to the
certificates and returns of delegates to the general assem-
bly, the number of votes given in their respective districts
for commissioners as aforesaid, and the return judges of
election shall on the same day and place when and where
they meet to ascertain and certify the number of votes for
the candidates for the general assembly, ascertain and cer-
tify the number of votes given as aforesaid for commis-
sioners.

SEC. 5. Be if further enacted, That in making their
return as directed by the last preceding section of this act,
they shall state the names of the candidates and the com-
missioner's district as hereinafter provided, in which they
reside, with the number of votes that each of them shall
have obtained, and they shall certify to the clerk of Carroll
county the five persons whom they shall find to have receiv-
ed the largest number of votes to be duly elected the com-

same commissioner's district as hereinafter described, but
the individual having the largest number of votes of those
residing in the same commissioner's district shall be decla-
