cher, Joseph Hughes, James Hughes, Zadock Clarke, John
Clarke, William Gephart and others, who are, or may here-
after become members thereof, be and they are hereby de-
clared to be one company corporation and body politic
forever hereafter, by the name and style of the Canada Fire
Company; the object of which company is hereby declared
to be the protection of the property of the citizens of Cum-
berland from destruction by fire, for which purpose they
are hereby made able and capable in law to have, purchase,
receive, possess and retain, to them and their successors,
lands, tenements, rents, annuities and other hereditaments,
and the same to grant, devise, alien and dispose of as they
may judge most conducive to the interest of said company,

provided nevertheless, that the said corporation or body po-
litic shall not at any time hold or possess property real and
personal or mixed, exceeding the sum of five thousand dol-
lars.

Proviso.
|
SEC. 2. And be it enacted, That the said company and
their successors, by the aforesaid name, shall forever here-
after be able and capable in law to sue and be sued, plead
and be impleaded, answer and be answered, defend and be
defended in all and every court of justice whatever, and
also to have, make and use a common seal, and the same to
break, alter and renew at pleasure, and to assemble and
meet together al such times and places as they may agree
upon, and to ordain, establish and put in execution, such
bye-laws and ordinances and regulations as to them shall
seem to be conducive to the interest of the said company,
and necessary to the good government and orderly manage-
ment thereof, and generally to do and execute all such acts,
matters and things as to them shall or may appertain to do,
the same not being contrary to the laws of this state.

Corporate

SEC. 3. And be it enacted, That nothing herein con-
tained, shall be so construed as to authorize or empower
said corporation to issue any note, token, certificate or other
evidence of debt to be used as a currency, and that nothing
herein contained shall be construed to deny to the legisla-
ture the right to repeal this law at pleasure.
