body, to appoint suitable persons to take charge of the pro-
perty of the corporation and to fix their salaries, to make
by-laws for the government of the association, in which
shall be ascertained the conditions and privileges of mem-
bership, the time and mode of choosing the officers, and
generally to do all such things as may be necessary to pro-
mote the objects of the corporation, and until a change in
the direction be effected, the persons herein named shall
constitute the board of directors.

Sec. 4. And be it enacted, That there shall be six prin-
cipal departments of the institution, to wit: the library, the
gallery of the fine arts, the gallery of the useful arts, the
department of the natural sciences, the department of mis-
cellaneous curiosities, and the department of lectures, the
scope of all which shall be defined from time to time by the
board of direction.

Sec. 5. And be it enacted, That the directors and vice
presidents shall be divided into as many classes as there are
departments in the institution, and each class shall have the
immediate contract of a particular department, subject to
the general superintendence of the board of direction, and
shall at every stated meeting of the board of direction, [and
shall at every stated meeting of the board, ] present a report:
of its condition, and the additions made to it, and by whom
the president shall designate the classes, to which members
of the board shall belong, and shall himself be a member of
each class; each class shall choose its own chairman.

Sec. 6. And be it enacted, That the chairman of all the
classes, and the president of the institution, shall constitute
the executive committee which in the recess of the board,
shall exercise its functions; a majority of which committee
shall constitute a quorum.

Sec. 7. And be it enacted, That the board of direction
shall have authority and are advised to found collections in
the institution attached to the proper department, to be
named after such individuals as in the opinion of the board
of direction, have deserved by their liberality, that their
names should be thus perpetuated as benefactors of the peo-
ple, and the board shall also be authorized to receive be-
quests or donations for any special purpose, such as the en-
dowment of lectureships, and the foundation of medals
designated by donor or deviser, that may be consistent with
the objects of the corporation, and the board shall have
power to grant honorary diplomas to the authors of useful
inventions, and to persons distinguished in science, litera-
ture, or the arts.
