Sec. 2. And be it enacted, That the purpose of the cor-
poration shall be the diffusion of knowledge among the peo-
ple, by forming for their use collections of objects of interest
in science, literature and the arts, and by establishing public

Sec. 3. And be it enacted, That the officers of the cor-
poration shall be a president, eight vice presidents, and
thirty-six directors, a corresponding secretary, a secretary
of exchanges, a recording secretary, and a treasurer, who
shall constitute the board of directors; the board of direc-
tion shall meet on the first Thursday of every month, and
whenever called together by the president; and at all meet-
