CHAPTER 34.

CHAP. 35.

An act authorising the Commissioners of Tax of Carroll
County, to levy a sum of money to build a Bridge over
Big Pipe Creek, on the road from Taneytown to Mid-
dleburg.

1841.

SECTION 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of
Maryland, That the commissioners of tax of Carroll coun-
ty, be and they are hereby authorised and empowered, in
their discretion, to levy on the assessable property of said
county, a sum of money, not exceeding twelve hundred
dollars, in two annual equal instalments, for the purpose of
building a bridge over Big Pipe creek, on the road leading
from Taneytown to Middleburg, in said county.
SEC. 2. And be it enacted, That the commissioners of
tax aforesaid, be and they are hereby authorised to contract
with any person or persons to build said bridge, and are
required to take bond or bonds, with sufficient security,
from any contractor or contractors, for the faithful perfor-
mance of the contract, in the usual form.

An act to incorporate St. John's Literary Institution.

SECTION 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of
Maryland, That John McElroy and Benjamin A. Young,
of Frederick city, and those who shall hereafter succeed
them as principal and assistant of St. John's Literary In-
stitution, he and they are hereby incorporated by the name
of St. John's Literary Institution, and as such shall have
succession, and may have and use a common seal, and be
able and capable to sue and be sued, plead and be implead-
ed, in any court of law or equity, to elect and appoint offi-
cers, and make rules and by-laws, not contrary to the laws
of this State; and shall have power to take, receive and
hold property, real, personal or mixed, which they may
acquire by purchase, bequest or devise; provided, that they
shall at no time hold, in this State, more than five hundred
acres of land, nor personal property exceeding the annual
value of one thousand dollars, exclusive of library and ap-
paratus.
