purpose in addition to the purposes specified in Section 799
of Article 27 of the Annotated Code of Maryland (1939 Edi-
tion), prisoners who have been sentenced to the Washington
County Jail. Working prisoners shall be eliminated from the
regular food list of jail inmates, and shall be provided with
three substantial meals on the days they are working. The
meals shall be paid for by the County Commissioners on
vouchers submitted by the Sheriff. Prisoners shall not be
worked more than eight hours in any one day, and shall be
paid in the discretion of the County Commissioners at the
rate of fifty cents per day. No prisoners shall be worked ex-
cept in accordance with the provisions of this section. This
section shall apply to all work done by Washington County
prisoners ordered to work by the County Commissioners, in-
cluding work done under Section 799 of Article 27 of the
Annotated Code of Maryland (1939 Edition).
SEC. 2. And be> it further enacted, That this Act shall take
effect June 1, 1949.

AN ACT to add fourteen new sections to Article 88B of the
Annotated Code of Maryland (1947 Supplement), title
"State Police", to be under a new sub-title "State Police
Retirement System", said new sections to be known as
Sections 46 to 59, inclusive, and to follow immediately
after Section 45 of said Article, relating to retirement and
pension benefits for certain members of the Department
of State Police.
SECTION 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Mary-
land, That fourteen new sections be and they are hereby
added to Article 88B of the Annotated Code of Maryland
(1947 Supplement), title "State Police", to be under a new
sub-title "State Police Retirement System", said new sec-
tions to be known as Sections 46 to 59, inclusive, to follow
immediately after Section 45 of said Article and all to read
as follows:
STATE POLICE RETIREMENT SYSTEM
46. (Definitions. ) The following words and phrases as
used in this sub-title, unless a different meaning is plainly
required by the context, shall have the following meanings:
