SHERIFFS

HOUSE BILL No. 715

AN ACT to repeal and re-enact, with amendments, Sub-sec-
tions (g) and (o) of Section 37B of Article 87 of the Anno-
tated Code of Maryland (1947 Supplement), title "Sheriffs",
sub-title "Compensation and Duties", as amended by Chapter
72 of the Acts of 1948 (Extraordinary Session), increasing
the expense allowance of the Sheriff and Deputy Sheriffs of
Cecil County and increasing the salary and expense allow-
ance of the Sheriff of Montgomery County.

The title of this Bill is defective in that it purports to in-
crease the expense allowance of the sheriff and deputy sheriffs
of Cecil County and increase the salary and expense allowance
of the sheriff of Montgomery County, while the Bill itself
increases the salary of the sheriff of Cecil County from $3, 000
to $8, 500, in addition to increasing the expense allowances
mentioned in the title. For this reason I have vetoed the Bill.

SOMERSET COUNTY

SENATE BILL No. 526

AN ACT directing the Board of Education of Somerset County
to sell a certain property, and specifying the disposition of
the proceeds therefrom.

This Bill directs, rather than authorizes, the Board of Edu-
cation of Somerset County to sell a particular property and
to apply the proceeds of sale to the improvement of another
particular school property.

The Board has requested that the Bill be vetoed, in which
request I am advised, the Senator from Somerset County con-
curs. The Bill has been vetoed.

HOUSE BILL No. 739

AN ACT to repeal and re-enact, with amendments, Section
110 of Article 52 of the Annotated Code of Maryland, (1947
Supplement), title 'Justices of the Peace7, sub-title 'Trial
Magistrates System', increasing the salary of the substi-
tute trial magistrate in Somerset County and to repeal
and re-enact, with amendments, Paragraph 139 (h) (5) of
Article 2B of the Annotated Code of Maryland (1947
Supplement), title "Alcoholic Beverages", sub-title "County
Dispensaries", increasing the compensation of the members
of the Liquor Control Board of Somerset County.
