(d) He shall give bond in an amount to be set by the
Mayor and City Council.

* 123. PERSONNEL. The Police Department shall be com-
posed of a Chief of Police, an Assistant Chief of Police, a
Lieutenant of Police, and such number of subordinate officers
and policemen as the Mayor and City Council may set by
ordinance. In the temporary absence of the Chief, the sub-
ordinate officers shall assume his duties, in the order of their
respective ranks.

124. QUALIFICATIONS. No person shall be employed in
any capacity in the Police Department unless he is a citizen
of the United States, a resident of the City for not less than
three years, and of good moral character, nor unless he can
read and write the English language and is not addicted to
the use of alcoholic beverages.

125. CLASSIFIED SERVICE. All officers, members and
employees of the Police Department, including the Chief of
Police, Assistant Chief of Police, Lieutenants of Police, shall
belong to the Classified Service of the City, to be chosen
and to hold their positions accordingly, subject to the rights,
privileges and duties thereof, as prescribed elsewhere in this
Article.

126. SALARIES, (a) The salaries of the members of the
Police Department of the City shall be as established by the
Mayor and City Council, subject to the provisions of this
section.

(b) Such salaries may not be established lower than those
established herein, namely, Chief of Police, $298. 00 per
month; Assistant Chief of Police, $262. 00 per month; Lieu-
tenant of Police, $238. 00 per month; Sergeant, $225. 00 per
month; Patrolman and Detective, $190. 00 per month during
the first year of service arid $220. 00 per month thereafter.

(c) Members may receive extra compensation for extra
duty in case of an emergency.

(d) The Chief of Police shall estimate annually in advance
the sum of money necessary for the salaries established as
prescribed by this section, and he shall certify this sum to
the Director of Finance. The Mayor and City Council shall
be required to levy such amount, which shall thereupon be
placed in a special fund for the members of the Police De-
partment and shall not be used for any other purpose, except
that at the end of the year any unused portion of such fund
shall revert to the general funds of the City.
