CHAPTER 597.

AN ACT to repeal and re-enact, with amendments. Section
189 of Article 77 of the Annotated Code of Maryland (1939
Edition), title "Public Education", sub-title ""Chapter 17.
"High Schools".
SECTION 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Mary-
land, That Section 189 of Article 77 of the Annotated Code of
Maryland (1939 Edition), title "Public Education", sub-title
"Chapter 17. High Schools", be and the same is hereby repealed
and re-enacted, with amendments, to read as follows:
189. Each county high school shall receive State aid on the
basis of the cost of instruction and in the following manner:
The sum of nine hundred dollars ($900) on account of the
principal, and the sum of six hundred dollars ($600) on ac-
count of each of the first two assistants employed for full-
time academic high school work; the sum of four hundred
and fifty dollars ($450) on account of each of the first two
full-time special teachers; the sum of four hundred and fifty
dollars ($450) on account of the next full-time assistant
teacher employed for regular (academic) high school work,
and the sum of one hundred and fifty dollars ($150) on account
of each additional full-time high school teacher, provided the
total amount does not exceed the sum of five thousand dollars
($5, 000). For Baltimore City the total amount on account of
each high school shall not exceed the sum of six thousand dol-
lars ($6, 000). In this chapter the term "Special Teacher" shall
be construed to mean a teacher of commercial, manual, or in-
dustrial training, home economics, agricultural branches,
music, physical education, fine or applied arts, and such other
subjects or services as are approved by the State Board of
Education.
State aid shall not be allowed for the second academic as-
sistant employed in any high school unless such high school
has an enrollment of at least fifty-five bona fide high school
pupils and an average daily attendance of at least forty-eight
pupils; and State aid shall not be allowed for the third
academic assistant employed in any high school unless such
high school has an enrollment of at least ninety bona fide high
school pupils, and an average daily attendance of at least eighty
high school pupils; and State aid shall not be allowed for
the fourth academic assistant employed in any school unless
such high school has an enrollment of at least one hundred and
twenty-five bona fide high school pupils and an average daily
attendance of at least one hundred and ten pupils; and State
