eries construct small dams in the stream below Conowingo
Dam to further the propagation of shad.
WHEREAS, the Susquehanna River and its headwaters have
been one of the main spawning grounds of the shad; and
WHEREAS, the Susquehanna River is now traversed by the
Conowingo Dam which prevents the shad from reaching their
usual spawning grounds; and
WHEREAS, it has been observed thats the shad, when unable
to reach the headwaters of the Susquehanna, spawn in pools
in the streams below the Conowingo Dam; and
WHEREAS, the pools in the stream below the Conowingo Dam
are so shallow that most of the eggs deposited therein are killed
by the sun; and
WHEREAS, the Game and Inland Fish Commission, by agree-
ment made pursuant to statute, annually receives on behalf
of the Conowingo Dam the sum of Two Thousand Dollars
(|2, 000. 00) for the purpose of stocking with food fish the lake
above and the stream below said Conowingo Dam; and
WHEREAS, it appears likely that if small dams, two or three
feet high, were constructed across the stream below the Cono-
wingo Dam, the depth of the pools in such streams would be-
come sufficient to protect the shad eggs until they hatched and
therefore it would be unnecessary further to stock the stream
below the dam and part of the money expended for this pur-
pose would thereby be saved; now therefore be it
Resolved by the General Assembly of Maryland, That the
Game and Inland Fish Commission and the Commission of
Tidewater Fisheries be requested to study the feasibility of
building such small dams, and, if the proposal is workable,
said Commissions be requested to use part of the money
received to stock the Susquehanna with food fish to build
small dams.
