An American Day", as a special occasion for the recogni-
tion of all, who by coming of age, or by naturalization have
attained the status of American citizenship.
WHEREAS, our Nation has been enriched both spiritually and
materially by the naturalization of thousands of foreign born
men and women, and by the coming of age of great numbers of
our youth, who have reached the full stature of citizenship
and have strengthened our Country by their service both at
home and on the battlefield; and
WHEREAS, the crisis through which our Country has struggled
for the past three and one half years, has made the significance
of "I Am An American Day" of greater importance than at
any time in our history, due to the necessity that every person
must be well informed and aware of his or her duties and
obligations as an American Citizen, that our American Way
of Life may be preserved; therefore, be it
Resolved by the General Assembly of Maryland, That the
Governor of Maryland, be and he is hereby requested to desig-
nate the Third Sunday of May, in each year as "I Am An Amer-
ican Day. "

A Joint Resolution authorizing provision for an increase in
the salaries of certain employees of the State Roads Com-
mission.
WHEREAS, upon the cessation of hostilities in the present
world conflict there will arise an immediate and urgent neces-
sity for a large number of jobs for returning veterans and for
those now employed in war industries, particularly during
that period in which industrial plants will be shut down for
reconversion from war work to peacetime uses; and
WHEREAS, the Congress of the United States, realizing the
urgency of providing useful employment for large numbers of
returning veterans and displaced war workers during the
period of economic instability which will inevitably occur at
the end of the existing war emergency, has provided for a
