four years of service, each police employee shall receive;
in addition to the base pay received by him during each
month of every year coming after the first three years of
his service, an amount equal to 5% of said base pay for the
first three years of service, 10% for the second three years
and so on until the total of his years of service is twenty-
four; and after he has had twenty-four years of service,
his longevity pay shall continue to be 40% of whatever his
base pay may be thereafter, from time to time. Such
amount shall be paid to him simultaneously with his base
pay. Any increase or decrease in base pay, received in
any month of any such three year period by reason of
promotion, demotion or otherwise shall be taken into ac-
count in determining the longevity pay receivable by any
such employee and, in figuring the same, the 5%, or mul-
tiple or multiples thereof, as the case may be, shall be taken
of the increased or decreased base pay. In calculating
longevity pay for those who are police employees of the
Department on May 4, 1943, the years of service rendered
by each such employee to the Commissioner of Motor Ve-
hicles and/or to the Department prior to the beginning of
the fiscal year ending in 1944 and to the Department
thereafter shall be taken into account.
Every police employee retired on pension under the pro-
visions of this Article shall be paid a pension determined
by using his annual remuneration, and all contributions
made by such police employee to the pension fund of said
Department shall be made from said annual remuneration.
"Annual remuneration, " as used in this Article, shall mean
base pay plus the longevity pay herein provided for.
SEC. 2. And be it further enacted, That Section 31 of
said Article 88B of the Annotated Code of Maryland (1943
Supp. ), title "State Police", sub-title "Pensions", be and
the same is hereby repealed and re-enacted with amend-
ments so as to read as follows:
31. Whenever any of the employees of the Department
of Maryland State Police and any of the license examiners
of the Commissioner of Motor Vehicles shall have given
meritorious service as such employee for a period of ten
continuous years, and shall have reached the age of 55
years, such employee shall be eligible for retirement upon
his voluntary application or may be retired by the Super-
intendent of the Department of Maryland State Police,
provided such employee be found, after medical examina-
tion given by a Medical Board of three physicians, consist-
ing of the Medical Examiner of the Department of Mary-
