be such as the Budget or Budget Amendment or Amend-
ments may from time to time provide. Such additional
ranks and grades shall be filled only in accordance with
the provisions of Sections 10 and 11 of this Article. In addi-
tion to said police employees, the Superintendent shall ap-
point for said Department such clerical employees as may
be required from time to time to carry on efficiently the
work thereof and as the Budget or Budget Amendment
or Amendments may from time to time provide, and such
clerical employees shall be appointed only in accordance
with the provisions of Section 10 of this Article.

Subject to such limitations as are imposed on him by
other sections of this Article, the Superintendent shall des-
ignate the authority, responsibility and duties of the vari-
ous ranks, grades and positions established under this
Section, and with the approval of the State Employment
Commissioner, shall also set standards and qualifications,
and fix prerequisites of training, education and experience.

Salaries to be paid to police employees of the Depart-
ment shall be as follows:.

Superintendent.......................................................................... $6, 500. 00

Major................................................................................................. 4, 500. 00

Captain............................................................................................... 3, 100. 00

Lieutenant...................................................................................... 2, 800. 00

Examining Physician............................................................ 2, 500. 00

Sergeant Major......................................................................... 2, 500. 00

First Sergeant.............................................................................. 2, 300. 00

Detective Sergeant.................................................................. 2, 300. 00

Sergeant (Quartermaster)............................................. 2, 300. 00

Sergeant Mechanic................................................................. 2, 300. 00

Sergeant.......................................................................................... 2, 100. 00

Corporal............................................................................................. 2, 000. 00

Officer 1/c....................................................................................... 1, 900. 00

Officer.................................................................................................. 1, 800. 00

Officer Probationer, second year................................. 1, 700. 00

Officer Probationer, first year......................................... 1, 600. 00

Any police employee receiving the salary hereinbefore
specified for the rank which he holds when this Act becomesr
effective shall not have such salary reduced by reason of the
establishment of the salary schedule herein prescribed for
said rank, so long as he shall remain incumbent in that
rank; provided, however, that the present holder of the.
title of Senior Captain shall continue to receive the salary
of $3, 600. 00 which he is now receiving.

Each of said salaries shall for the purposes of this sec-
tion be deemed to be the base pay of each rank and grade.
For each three years of service up to and including twenty-
