1676 LAWS OF MARYLAND. [CH. 968

repealed and re-enacted, with amendments, to read as
follows:

294. The Sheriff of Worcester County shall receive an
annual salary of Eighteen Hundred Dollars ($1, 800. 00),
payable in twelve equal monthly installments of One Hun-
dred Fifty Dollars ($150. 00) each on the first day of each
month, and the said Sheriff shall appoint two deputies who
shall receive annual salaries of One Thousand Eight Hun-
dred Dollars ($1, 800. 00) each payable to them in twelve
equal monthly installments of One Hundred and Fifty Dol-
lars ($150. 00) each on the first day of each month, all of
which said salaries shall be paid by the County Commis-
sioners of Worcester County. The deputies shall be so
appointed that not more than one shall be resident of any
County Commissioner District nor shall any deputy be
a resident of the Commissioner District of which the
Sheriff is a resident, and the said deputies shall hold office
at the pleasure of the sheriff and may be removed by said
sheriff at any time he may elect. The County Commission-
ers shall levy annually a sum sufficient for the payment of
the salaries of said Sheriff and of his said deputies and to
pay not exceeding One Thousand Dollars ($1, 000. 00)
for the allowances and expenses of said Sheriff to which he
shall be entitled under the provisions of this sub-title. The
said Sheriff and his said deputies shall receive no other
compensation, as expenses, allowances, salary, fees, costs
or otherwise for services performed in said county from
the County Commissioners of Worcester County except as
provided in this sub-title.

SEC. 2. And be it further enacted, That this Act is
hereby declared to be an emergency measure and necessary
for the immediate preservation of the public health and
safety and having been passed by a yea and nay vote,
supported by three-fifths of all of the members elected
to each of the two Houses of the General Assembly, the
same shall take effect from the date of its passage.
