to that of the Governor; and shall be removable by such mem-
ber of the board in his discretion. In Baltimore City, the
chief clerk, with the approval of the supervisors, shall from
time to time, secure such temporary assistants as may be nec-
essary for the proper transaction of the business of the office,
but the compensation of such assistants to be paid by the
Mayor and City Council of Baltimore, upon requisition by the
said supervisors shall not exceed the sum of five thousand dol-
lars ($5000. 00) in any one year.
(c) Beginning with June 1, 1945, the Supervisors of Elec-
tions of Montgomery County may employ any member of the
Bar of the Court of Appeals of the State of Maryland, resident
in Montgomery County, who shall be paid for his services the
sum of $1, 200 per annum, and shall also employ and appoint a
Chief Clerk, who shall be paid for his services as such, the sum
of $1, 500 per annum, an Assistant Chief Clerk at a salary of
$600 per annum, two Registrars who shall constitute the Per-
manent Board of Registry at a salary of $2, 400 each per annum,
and each member of the Permanent Board of Registry shall be
paid the further sum of $600 per annum for the expenses in-
cident to the operation of their automobiles, and shall also
employ and appoint a stenographer at a salary of $2, 000 per
annum, two clerks at a salary of $1, 800 each per annum, two
clerks at a salary of $1, 600 each per annum, and shall from
time to time employ and appoint such permanent or temporary
clerks as may be necessary for the proper transaction of the
business of the office, and at such compensation as may be fixed
by the Board of Supervisors of Elections. The Supervisors of
Elections of Montgomery County shall also employ and appoint
a Custodian of Voting Machines, and one Deputy Custodian,
whose duty shall be to prepare the machines to be used in the
elections to be held therein, and the Deputy Custodian ap-
pointed by the Supervisors shall belong to the other leading
party from that to which the Custodian shall belong. Such
Custodian and Deputy Custodian shall, under the direction of
said Board, have charge of and represent the said Board during
the preparation of the said voting machines, and perform such
other duties as may be prescribed from time to time by the
Board of Supervisors of Elections. Such Custodian and Deputy
Custodian shall each be paid the sum of $10. 00 per diem for
each day they are engaged in the preparation, repair or mainte-
nance of said voting machines and they shall each be paid the
actual expenses incident to the operation of their automobiles
in the performance of their duties as may be approved by the
Board of County Commissioners. Each Custodian shall take
the constitutional oath of office, which shall be filed with the
