allowed for his actual expenditures for food, provisions and
necessary supplies furnished the prisoners confined in jail,
provided the total cost of the food so furnished shall not
exceed the sum of Seventy-five Cents per day for each
prisoner so confined and for the warden, the night guard and
the cook. The Sheriff shall keep an itemized account of all
such expenditures and in the form and system prescribed by
the County Commissioners, and shall make a report of such
expenditures according to such form and system to the County
Commissioners at their first meeting in every month, accom-
panied by a statement showing the actual number of prisoners
and attendants daily supplied during such period; and the
County Commissioners upon examination of said account and
finding the same to be correct and within the limits herein
provided, shall pay the same to the Sheriff. The Sheriff shall
be responsible for the conduct in office of his appointees and
shall have power to cancel such appointments at any time if
he deems such action necessary.

544A. In Anne Arundel County, the Sheriff shall be en-
titled to charge and receive f 1.25 for serving writ and return,
for serving subpoena and return, or for summons in partition,
for every person summoned, each return, said fees to be
accounted for and paid to the Treasury of the County as pro-
vided by Section 37C of Article 87 of the Annotated Code of
Maryland (1947 Supplement).

SEC. 3. And be it further enacted, That the Sheriff of Anne
Arundel County shall account for and pay to the Treasury of
the County all fees collected by him from and after the effec-
tive date of the amendment of Article IV, Section 44 of the
Maryland Constitution, enacted by Chapter 786 of the Acts
of 1945 of the General Assembly of Maryland and ratified at
the November election of 1946. Upon payment of same to the
Treasury, the past use of said fees to pay expenses of the
Sheriff's office is hereby ratified and confirmed.

The County Commissioners of Anne Arundel County shall
either provide for or pay to the Sheriff of the County the
necessary expenses incurred by him in performance^ of his
official duties, from the effective date of the aforesaid amend-
ment of the Maryland Constitution, in so far as they have not
already provided or paid the same, including expenses for
telephones, stationery and for other purposes, and including
the necessary traveling expenses of the Sheriff for conveying
prisoners to any penal institution in the State and other
necessary traveling expenses. Until the next County Budget
is prepared and funds appropriated, the County Commis-
sioners are authorized and directed to pay past and current
expenses of the Sheriff's office out of general surplus funds of
the County, provided that the Sheriff shall present a full and
complete statement under oath setting forth all the items of
