Election shall immmediately certify to the Councilmen or
Councilman elected the fact of there being a tie and the
said Councilmen or Councilman shall at the first Board meet-
ing thereafter designate one of the said persons who received
a tie vote to be Mayor or Councilman as the case may be;
and the Mayor or Councilman, as the case may be, shall hold
his office as fully as if he had received the highest number
of votes.

SEC. 2. And be it further enacted, That this Act shall take
effect June 1, 1948.

CHAPTER 17
(Senate Bill 18)

AN ACT to repeal and re-enact, with amendments. Section
716A of Article 4 of the Code of Public Local Laws of Mary-
land and Baltimore City Charter (1938 Edition), title
"Baltimore City," sub-title "Justices of the Peace and Con-
stables," as said section was amended by Chapter 969 of the
Acts of 1943, increasing the compensation of the Judges
of the People's Court of Baltimore City.

. SECTION 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Mary-
land, That Section 716A of Article 4 of the Code of Public
Local Laws of Maryland and Baltimore City Charter (1938
Edition), title "Baltimore City", sub-title "Justices of the
Peace and Constables", as said section was amended by
Chapter 969 of the Acts of 1943, be and it is hereby repealed
and re-enacted, with amendments, to read as follows:

716A. The Mayor and City Council of Baltimore City shall
ay to the Chief Judge of the People's Court a salary of
19,000 per annum, payable monthly, and to each of the
Associate Judges of the People's Court, a salary of $8,500
per annum, payable monthly, and none of said Judges
shall receive any other compensation or fees whatsoever
for their services hereunder. Each of said Judges shall
devote to his duties as Judge a regular session, from 9.30
A. M. until 4 P. M. on every day except Sundays and legal
holidays and Saturday afternoons after 12.30 P. M., and such
other sessions at such times as the Chief Judge deems neces-
sary or advisable, during such eleven months in each year as
the Chief Judge shall assign. No Judge of the People's Court
shall engage in the practice of law while holding the position
of Judge. The Chief Judge shall make such assignments in
