The substitute registrar or registrars if not oue of the clerks
employed under the authority of Section 4 of this Article/
shall be paid the sum of Ten Dollars each per diem? for each
day served, said sum of Ten Dollars per diem to be paid by
the Mayor and City Council of Baltimore. The said Board
may also in its discretion appoint such number of temporary
registrars as they may deem necessary, one-half of whom shall
be selected from a political party opposite to that of the Gov-
ernor; any two of such temporary registrars, provided one be
of the opposite political affiliation to the other, shall have
authority during the period of their appointment to register,
transfer, affiliate or change the affiliation of any person or
persons so applying. Such registrars and temporary regis-
trars shall have all the rights, powers, duties and responsi-
bilities of registration officers, including the right and power
of administering oaths. The temporary registrars shall be
paid the sum of $10.00 each per diem, for each day served, said
sum of $10.00 per diem to be paid by the Mayor and City
Council of Baltimore.

SEC. 2. And be it further enacted, That this Act shall take
effect June 1, 1948.

CHAPTER 63

(House Bill 39)

AN ACT to repeal and re-enact, with amendments, Section
37A(X) of Article 87 of the Annotated Code of Maryland
(1947 Supplement), title "Sheriff", sub-title "Compensation
and Duties", relating to the payment of the salaries and
expenses of the Sheriff's office In Baltimore City.

SECTION 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Mary-
land, That Section 37A(X) of Article 87 of the Annotated
Code of Maryland (1947 Supplement), title "Sheriff", sub-title
"Compensation and Duties", be and it is hereby repealed and
re-enacted, with amendments, to read as follows:

37A(X). In Baltimore City, the Sheriff shall receive an
annual salary of f 7,500.00. He shall appoint a Chief Deputy
at $4,300.00 per annum, one Writ Clerk at $3,000.00 per
annum, one Assistant Writ Clerk at $2,900.00 per annum, one
Equity Docket Clerk at $2,900.00 per annum, one Steno-
grapher-Docket Clerk at $2,500.00 per annum, and such Depu-
ties at $2,500.00 per annum and such assistants at such com-
pensation as shall be provided for in the annual Ordinance of
