(House Bill 17)

AN ACT to repeal and re-enact, with amendments, Section
4(c) of Article 33 of the Annotated Code of Maryland (1947
Supplement), title "Elections", sub-title "Election Officials",
increasing the compensation of certain employees of the
Supervisors of Elections of Montgomery County.

SECTION 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Mary-
land, That Section 4(c) of Article 33 of the Annotated Code
of Maryland (1947 Supplement), title "Elections", sub-title
"Election Officials", be and it is hereby repealed and re-en-
acted, with amendments, to read as follows:

(c). Beginning with June 1, 1945, the Supervisors of Elec-
tions of Montgomery County may employ any member of the
Bar of the Court of Appeals of the State of Maryland, resi-
dent in Montgomery County, who shall be paid for his services
the sum of $1,200 per annum, and shall also employ and
appoint a Chief Clerk, who shall be paid for his services as
such, the sum of f 1,500 per annum, and an Assistant Chief
Clerk at a salary of $900 per annum, two Eegistrars who
shall constitute the Permanent Board of Registry at a
salary of $2,700 each per annum; the Chief Clerk and
the Assistant Chief Clerk shall be the members of the
Permanent Board of Registry, and they shall be of op-
posite political parties; each member of the Permanent
Board of Registry shall be paid the further sum of $600
per annum for the expenses incident to the operation
of their automobiles, and shall also employ and appoint a
stenographer at a salary of $2,200 per annum, two clerks
at a salary of $2,040 each per annum, two clerks at a
salary of $1,800 each per annum, and shall from time
to time employ and appoint such permanent or temp-
orary clerks as may be necessary for the proper trans-
action of the business of the office, and at such compensation
as may be fixed by the Board of Supervisors of Elections.
The Supervisors of Elections of Montgomery County shall
also employ and appoint a Custodian of Voting Machines, and
one Deputy Custodian, whose duty it shall be to prepare the
machines to be used in the elections to be held therein, and
the Deputy Custodian appointed by the Supervisors shall
belong to the other leading party from that to which the
Custodian shall belong. Such Custodian and Deputy Cus-
todian shall, under the direction of said Board, have charge
of and represent the said Board during the preparation of the
said voting machines, and perform such other duties as may
be prescribed from time to time by the Board of Supervisors
