CHAPTER 559.
(House Bill 561)
AN ACT to repeal and re-enact, with amendments, Section
5 of Article 88B of the Annotated Code of Maryland (1939
Edition), title "State Police", as amended by Chapter 900
of the Acts of 1941, providing for the establishment of ranks
and grades for the police employees of the Department of
Maryland State Police, for the appointment of clerical
employees therefor and for the salaries of all such employees,
authorizing the Superintendent to establish additional ranks
and grades and to increase the number of employees of the
Department from time to time as provided in the Budget or
Budget Amendment; and providing for longevity pay to cer-
tain employees of said Department; relating to bonus pay-
ments for certain employees of said Department; and to add
a new section to said Article, said section to be known as
Section 5A to follow immediately after Section 5 and to
provide that nothing in Article 64A of said Code shall
authorize the State Employees Standard Salary Board to
reduce the statutory salaries or change the statutory ranks
or grades of police employees of said Department, or to
reduce, limit or change the statutory powers of the Superin-
tendent, and that nothing in any pay plan or amendment or
amendments thereto, now or hereafter in effect under Sec-
tion 16 of said Article 64A, or in any rule or regulation, now
or hereafter in effect under Section 17 of said Article 64A,
shall apply to the police employees of said Department.
SECTION 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Mary-
land, That Section 5 of Article 88B of the Annotated Code of
Maryland (1939 Edition), title "State Police", be and the
same is hereby repealed and re-enacted, with amendments, to
read as follows:
5. The Superintendent may establish and maintain a classi-
fication of ranks and grades for the police employees of the
Department as follows: Major (1); Captains (2), one to be
designated as Senior Captain; Lieutenants (7); Medical Exam-
iner (1); Sergeant Major (1); First Sergeants (9); Detective
Sergeants (6); Quartermaster Sergeant (1); Sergeant Me-
chanic (1); Sergeants (17); Corporals (18); Officers First
Class (26).; and Officers (91). The number of police employees
in each such rank and grade shall be that appearing in paren-
theses after each rank and grade set forth above; provided,
however, that such number may be increased by the Superin-
tendent, from time to time, in such number as the Budget or
Budget Amendment or Amendments may from time to time
