which the same was issued, shall immediately make application
to the Department for a new registration number, shall be per-
mitted to operate said vehicle, for a period not exceeding ten
days from the date of notification to the Department, upon
placing the remaining registration plate upon the rear of the
vehicle; provided said owner shall have made application to
the Department for a substitute registration under a new
registration number, and pending receipt of substitute regis-
tration plates he shall be permitted to operate the vehicle and,
provided further, that said owner shall have and display upon
demand of any peace officer evidence of such application having
been made.

(e) It shall be the duty of all peace officers and the Mary-
land State Police to report to the Department all vehicles
operating in violation of Section 28 of this Article and the
Department shall verify whether the said owner has complied
with the provisions of this section.

(f) Fees to be charged by the Department for the replace-
ment of lost certificates of title, registration certificates and
registration plates are: Certificate of title, fifty (50c. ) cents;
registration certificate, fifty (50c. ) cents; duplicate dealer cer-
tificates, twenty-five (25c. ) cents; registration plates, together
with appropriate registration certificate, one (f 1. 00) dollar
in the case of loss of one motor vehicle registration plate; and
two ($2. 00) dollars in case of the loss of two motor vehicle
registration plates; or one ($1. 00) dollar in the case of a
trailer, motorcycle or bicycle with motor attachment; pro-
vided in the case of registration plates (if only one has been
lost, mutilated or has become illegible) the remaining registra-
tion plate shall be returned to the Department, when the sub-
stitute set of registration plates has been received.

(g) Violation of this section shall be deemed a misdemeanor
and upon conviction shall be punishable by a fine of not less
than one ($1. 00) dollar nor more than ten ($10. 00) dollars.

33. DEPARTMENT SHALL ASSIGN NEW IDENTIFYING NUM-
BERS. The Department is authorized to assign a distin-
guishing number to a motor vehicle whenever the serial or
engine number thereon is destroyed or obliterated and to issue
to the owner a stamped or special plate bearing such distin-
guishing number which shall be affixed to the vehicle in a
position to be determined by the Department. Such motor
vehicle shall be registered under such distinguishing number in
lieu of the former engine or serial number.

34. REGULATIONS GOVERNING CHANGE OF ENGINES. The
Department is authorized to adopt and enforce such registra-
