in which a regular election is held, and his duties shall be
as hereinafter provided in this Article. In the event, for
any reason, the Supervisor of Elections, at any time, is
unable to serve and perform the duties of his office, the
town clerk, treasurer and collector of Cambridge shall as-
sume and perform the duties of said office of Supervisor
of Elections, and, when acting for and in the place of the
Supervisor of Elections is empowered, authorized and di-
rected to perform all the duties of said office. In the event
the town clerk, treasurer and collector is obliged to so as-
sume and perform the duties of said office of Supervisor
of Elections the salary of said office shall be apportioned
between the town clerk, treasurer and collector and the
Supervisor of Elections, in amounts set by and in the dis-
cretion of the Commissioners of Cambridge.
48. The Commissioners of Cambridge may cause to be
made, in any year, a general registration of the legal voters
in each of the several wards of this city, the qualifications
of such voters to be such as are now prescribed by the
Constitution and laws of this State and of this Article,
such registration shall be essential to the right to vote at
any election held under this Article, or under any of the
provisions of any Act of the General Assembly, submitting
any proposition or question to the decision of the voters
of the City of Cambridge. In order to effect such general
registration, the Supervisor of Elections, on or before the
first day of May, in every year in which a general registra-
tion is held appoint two persons from each ward, with
disregard as to political faith, to act as officers of registra-
tion in their respective wards, who shall sit on two con-
secutive days, viz: the first Tuesday and first Wednesday
in May, and also on the first Wednesday and the first
Thursday in July, between the hours of 9 A. M. and 5
P. M. on the said days for the purpose of enrolling and
registering the qualified voters from their respective wards,
in such places as shall be designated by the Commissioners
of Cambridge, and shall receive compensation, in the sum
of five dollars per day, for their services. Said registration
shall specify the name, age, color and the residence of the
voters on each street, lane or alley of the town, and for this
purpose the Supervisor of Elections by and with the advice
and consent of the Commissioners of Cambridge, shall pro-
vide the necessary registration books, suitable for said
purpose. After the registration is completed, the said
books shall be returned by the said officers of registration
to the Supervisor of Elections at the City Hall, who shall
safely keep and preserve them; and in every year after the
year 1912, in the month of June, and on the first Tuesday
