173. The Bailiff to the Grand Jury of the Circuit Court
for Harford County shall receive the sum of Thirty Dollars
for each term of said Court he or she shall attend, and
to which a jury is summoned. The Circuit Court for Har-
ford County is hereby authorized, empowered and directed
to appoint a Crier and as many Court Bailiffs as in its
discretion shall be necessary for the proper conduct of the
business of said Court. The total compensation of the
Crier and the Bailiffs, however, shall not exceed the sum of
Twenty-one Hundred Dollars per annum. The compensation
of the Crier and the Bailiffs so appointed shall be fixed by
the Court. The above compensation as to Bailiffs is to be in
lieu of compensation provided for Bailiffs in Section 11
of Article 36 of Bagby's Code of the Public General Laws
of Maryland, title "Fees of Officers", sub-title "Bailiffs".

SEC. 3. And be it further enacted, That this Act is
hereby declared to be an emergency law and necessary for
the immediate preservation of the public health and safety,
and being passed by a yea and nay vote, supported by
three-fifths of all the members elected to each of the two
Houses of the General Assembly, the same shall take effect
from the date of its passage.

CHAPTER 116.
(Senate Bill 175)

AN ACT to repeal and re-enact, with amendments, Sec-
tions 140 and 141 of the Code of Public Local Laws of
Montgomery County (1939 Edition—being Article 16 of
the Code of Public Local Laws of Maryland), title
"Montgomery County", sub-title "Court Stenographer",
changing the method. of paying the Court Stenographer
from a per diem basis to a monthly salary, fixing his
salary and defining his duties.

SECTION 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of
Maryland, That Sections 140 and 141 of the Code of Public
Local Laws of Montgomery County (1939 Edition—being
Article 16 of the Code of Public Local Laws of Maryland),
title "Montgomery County", sub-title "Court Stenog-
rapher", be, and the same are hereby, repealed and re-
enacted, with amendments, so as to read as follows:
