(5) "United States" shall mean the United States of
America.
(6) "Project" shall mean any resettlement project or
rural rehabilitation project for resettlement purposes of
the United States, located within this State, and shall
include persons inhabiting such project.
2. The Board is hereby authorized and empowered to
make requests of the United States, for and on behalf of
this State, for payment of such sums in lieu of taxes as
the United States may agree to pay, and to consummate
agreements with the United States, in the name of this
State, for the performance of services by the State for
the benefit of projects, and for the payment by the United
States to the State, in one or more installments, of such
sums in lieu of taxes.
3. The amount of any payment of sums in lieu of taxes
may be based on the estimated cost to the State of perform-
ing services for the benefit of the projects during the period
of the agreement, after taking into consideration the bene-
fits to be derived by the State from such projects, but
shall not be in excess of the taxes which would result to
the State for the said period if the real property of the
projects within the State were taxable.
4. A duplicate copy of every agreement for payment
of sums in lieu of taxes shall be filed in the office of the
Treasurer of this State. On or before the date on which
any payment of sums in lieu of taxes is due, the State
Treasurer shall present a bill to the United States, in the
name of the State, in the amount of such payment. The
State Treasurer shall give to the United States a receipt
in the name of the State for all payments of sums in lieu
of taxes.
5. All payments of sums in lieu of taxes received by
this State shall be deposited in the General Fund, and
shall become subject to appropriation as a part thereof.
SEC. 2. And be it further enacted, That this Act shall
take effect June 1, 1939.
