CHAPTER 612.
(House Bill 627)
AN ACT to add a new section to Article 27 of the Annotated
Code of Maryland (1935 Supplement), title "Crimes and
Punishments", sub-title "Bribery", said new section to be
known as 31A making the bribery of persons participating
in athletic events a crime.
SECTION 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Mary-
land, That Section 31A of Article 27 of the Annotated Code
of Maryland (1935 Supplement), title "Crimes and Punish-
ments", sub-title "Bribery", is hereby enacted to read as
follows:
31A. Any person or persons who shall bribe or attempt to
bribe any persons participating in or connected in any way
with any athletic contest held in this State shall be deemed
guilty of bribery, and on being convicted thereof shall be
fined not less than One Hundred Dollars ($100. 00) nor more
than Five Thousand ($5, 000. 00), or, in the discretion of the
Court shall be sentenced to be imprisoned in the Penitentiary
of this State for not less than six months nor more than three
years, or both fined and imprisoned; and any person so brib-
ing or attempting to bribe or so demanding or receiving a
bribe shall be a competent witness, and compellable to testify
against any person or persons who may have committed any
of the aforesaid offenses; provided, that any person so com-
pelled to testify in any such case shall be exempt from trial
and punishment for the crime of which such person so testify-
ing may have been a participant.
SEC. 2. And be it further enacted, That this Act shall take
effect June 1, 1939.

AN ACT to add three new sections to Article 64A of the An-
notated Code of Maryland (1924 Edition), title "Merit
System", to be under the sub-title ''Rates of Compensation",
said new sections to be known as Sections 13A to 13C, inclu-
sive, and to follow immediately after Section 13 of said
