ber 1, 1936, and ending August 31, 1937, any and all other
provisions of this section to the contrary notwithstanding.

SEC. 2. And be it further enacted, That Section 134 of
Article 77 of the Annotated Code of Maryland, 1924 Edi-
tion, title "Public Education, " sub-title "The County Super-
intendent of Schools, " be and the same is hereby repealed
and re-enacted, with amendments, to read as follows:

134. The county board of education of each county shall
appoint during the month of May a superintendent of
schools for a term of four years, from the first day of Au-
gust next succeeding his appointment, and he shall hold
office until his successor qualifies. No person shall be elig-
ible for appointment to the office of county superintendent
of schools who does not hold from the State Superintend-
ent of Schools a certificate in administration and supervi-
sion as provided for in Section 85 of this Article, nor shall
the appointment of any person by the county board of edu-
cation to the position of county superintendent of schools
be valid without the written approval of the State Super-
intendent of Schools. Provided that all county superintend-
ents of schools holding office at the time when this Act shall
take effect, shall continue to serve to the end of the term
for which they were originally appointed, and until their
successors qualify, unless removed, as hereinafter pro-
vided, and shall also be eligible for reappointment; and
provided, further, that all county superintendents of
schools shall be paid, beginning with the school year 1922-
1923, on the basis of the salaries hereinafter specified.
The salary of the county superintendent of schools shall
not be diminished during his term of office. The county
superintendent of schools shall devote his entire time to
public school business and shall receive such compensation
as the county board of education shall direct, provided that
no county superintendent of schools appointed to office
under the provisions of this section, or continuing in office
under the provisions of this section, shall be paid an an-
nual salary of less than two thousand five hundred dollars
($2, 500), and if the county has less than one hundred and
fifty teachers in all the schools, the county superintendent
of such county may be paid, in the discretion of the county
board of education, an annual salary up to and including
two thousand nine hundred and forty dollars ($2, 940);
and in any county having one hundred and fifty teachers
but less than two hundred teachers in all the schools, the
county superintendent of such county shall in no case be
