tions were enacted by Chapter 62 of the Acts of 1931,
authorizing an increase in the levy and payments to be
made for the La Plata Volunteer Fire Department.

SECTION 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of
Maryland, That Sections 84A and 84B of Article 9 of the
Code of Public Local Laws of Maryland (1930 Edition),
title "Charles County, " sub-title "County Commissioners, "
as said sections were enacted by Chapter 62 of the Acts
of 1931, be and they are hereby repealed and re-enacted,
with amendments, to read as follows:

84A. The County Commissioners of Charles County are
hereby authorized, empowered and directed to pay the
sum of five hundred dollars ($500. 00), with the authority
to pay an additional five hundred dollars ($500. 00), an-
nually to the La Plata Volunteer Fire Department, so
long as said fire department remains an active
fire-fighting organization, for its benefit, said sum of
money to be used by the said fire department for the
purchase, repair and maintenance of fire-fighting equip-
ment. The said payment shall be made on the first day
of September in each and every year by the County Com-
missioners of Charles County.

84B. The County Commissioners of Charles County are
hereby authorized, and empowered to levy the said sum of
one thousand dollars ($1, 000. 00) annually for the above
purpose on the assessable property of said county. Before
the County Commissioners shall be required to pay the
aforesaid sum of money, the said Commissioners shall have
the power to require of the officers of said fire department
to appear before them and show to the satisfaction of said
Commissioners that any sums of money paid by the said
Commissioners to the said fire department under this Act
have been expended for the purposes set forth in his Act,
and also that said fire department is an active fire-fighting
organization. In the event said fire department herein-
before mentioned ceases to remain an active fire-fighting
organization, or has not used the moneys appropriated to
it for the sole purposes set forth in this Act, then this Act
shall become null and void.

SEC. 2. And be it further enacted, That this Act is
hereby declared to be an emergency law and necessary for
the immediate preservation of the public health and safety,
