zens" and ending with the words "under this charter" and by
striking out of the last sentence of said section the word "they"
and inserting in place thereof the words "the Mayor and Coun-
cilmen, " and by adding to said section the following sentence:
"The Mayor and Town Council, in their discretion may fix
such compensation for the Treasurer as they may deem just
and necessary, " so that Section 5, as amended, shall read as
follows:

Section 5. And be it further enacted, That at the first elec-
tion of officers held under this Charter, the qualified voters of
the town shall elect a Mayor and Treasurer to serve the term

of one year, and shall elect four Councilmen, one from each
Ward, to be voted for by the qualified voters of each Ward, two
to serve for the term of two years and two to serve for the
term of one year. At the first meeting the Mayor and Council
shall designate the time to be served by each Councilman. At
each successive annual election the qualified voters of each ward
in which there is a vacancy shall elect a Councilman to serve
for the term of two years. The Mayor and Treasurer must
continually reside in said town, and each Councilman in his
respective ward during their term of office, and the Mayor and
Councilmen shall receive no compensation for their services,
except that the Mayor shall receive the fees hereinafter allowed.
The Mayor and Council, in their discretion, may fix such com-
pensation for the Treasurer as they may deem just and neces-
sary.

SEC. 2. And be it further enacted,, That Section 7 of the
said Act be and is hereby amended by striking out all of said
section after the first comma and changing the same so as to
read:

Section 7. And be it further enacted, That all citizens of
the United States of the age of twenty-one years and over who
shall have actually resided within the limits of the town of
Brentwood not less than 365 days next preceding any regular
election for Councilmen, who have never been convicted of any
infamous crime, shall be qualified voters of said town and as
such shall be entitled to register as hereinafter provided and
after such registration to vote at any election held in said town
under the provisions of this Act, unless they shall be thereafter
disqualified by loss of citizenship, actual removal from said
town or conviction for an infamous crime, in which case their
