duty it shall be to see whether the said applicant is entitled to
compensation under the provisions of this Act and shall check up
the service so made as a basis for a claim under the provisions of
this Act and shall certify each application which is correct to
the Comptroller of the State of Maryland who shall, by an order
to the Treasurer of the State of Maryland, provide for the pay-
ment of each claim so applied for and certified. Residence in
the State of Maryland, as required by the aforegoing provisions
of this Act shall be proven by the affidavits of two voters of the
State of Maryland, which affidavit shall be considered as prima
facie evidence of the applicant's eligibility in that connection.
SEC. 4 And be it further enacted, That any person entitled
to compensation under the provisions of this Act who desires to
continue his education in any of the public elementary, high or
vocational schools of the State, or in any other institution of
high school or collegiate grade in the State not run for profit
shall, under rules and regulations to be prescribed by the State
Board of Education, be entitled to receive thirty dollars per
month while in regular attendance as a student at any such in-
stitution, but not to exceed a total of one thousand and eighty
dollars in lieu of the compensation provided for in Section 3
of this Act, except as hereinafter provided.
SEC. 5. And be it further enacted, That the benefits of this
educational opportunity shall be available to persons who de-
sire full-time short courses of less than a year's duration. If
a person attending such short courses would receive a larger
compensation under Section 3 of this Act, than he does under
the provision of Section 4 of this Act, he shall receive at the
completion of his course the difference between the bonus under
Section 4 and the compensation which he would receive under
Section 3 of this Act, if that is the larger amount.
SEC. 6. And be it further enacted, That the persons entitled
to the bonus provided for in Section 4 shall apply to the State
Board of Education within six months from Jan. 1, 1923, and be
assigned to an educational institution by such Board under
such rules and regulations as it shall prescribe, always meeting
the expressed wishes of the applicant as far as possible. Atten-
dance at an educational institution under the provisions of this
Act may be begun at the beginning of any semester or term or
quarter. The bonus shall be authorized for one year at a
time and may be renewed annually not to exceed three times.
The continuance of the granting of the bonus shall dependent
