missioners. He shall appear before the Commissioners at the
first meeting in each and every month, and make a statement
to them of the work done and money expended. He shall ex-
amine and certify to the correctness of all bills and accounts

for any work done or materials furnished for any of the public
roads or bridges in Dorchester County before the same shall
be paid by the County Commissioners; and the said County
Commissioners shall make no payment until such accounts have
been certified by said engineer. He shall make out annually
in writing, a detailed report of all work done on the county
roads and bridges for the year, together with the names of all
persons working on said roads and bridges, and the amount to
which each person is entitled for such work, and which he has
certified as correct, which report shall be made on or before
the 15th day of May for the fiscal year ending; on the 30th O

day of the preceding April. Said Comity Road "Engineer
shall not be interested in any firm or corporation from which
anything shall be purchased for the use of said roads and
bridges or receive any commission on said purchase.

Section 272. The County Commissioners for Dorchester

County shall, subject to the approval of the County Road En-
gineer, appoint such assistants to the said engineer in each of
the election districts of said county as may be deemed neces-
sary. Under the control and direction of the County Road
Engineer, the assistants shall supervise the road and bridge
work in their respective districts and perform such other duties
as the County Road Engineer may prescribe. The assistants
shall keep the time of all the employees in their respective
districts, and a correct record of all materials used, and make
such reports as may be required thereof, and certify bills
therefor to the County Road Engineer, to be by him approved
before being presented to the County Commissioners for Dor-
chester County for payment. For incompetency or willful
neglect of any duty imposed upon them by this Act, or by the
rules and regulations duly made by the County Road Engi-
neer, and of which they shall be given due notice, any assistant
may be suspended from service at any time by the County
Road Engineer, who shall thereupon state in writing to the
County Commissioners for Dorchester County the reason for
such suspension, and if the action of the County Road Engi-
neer shall be sustained by a majority Vote of the County Com-
missioners for Dorchester County, the suspended assistant shall
be summarily removed from office and his successor appointed
