60 MARYLAND.

PACA, SAMUEL CHASE, THOS. STONE,CHARLES
CARROLL, of Carrollton, and ROBERT ALEX-
ANDER, Esqs, or a majority of them, or any
three or more of them, to be deputies to repre-
sent this colony in congress, in as full and am-
ple a manner as the deputies of this colony
might have dont under any appointment here-
tofore made, until the next convention shall
make further order therein.

Extract from the minutes:

G. Duvall, clerk.

Heretofore the d legates from Maryland had
been chosen by a convention assembled from
the respective counties; but the Constitution of
Maryland having gone into effect, new appoint-
ments of delegates were made, "by joint ballot
of both houses," on the 15th February 1777,
when Samuel Chase, Benjamin Rumsey, Wil-
liam Smith, Charles Carroll, of Carrollton,
Thomas Stone and William Paca, esqs. or any
two or more of them" were appointed to act as
delegates.

On the 22d December, 1777, the general as-
sembly of Maryland, " Resolved That Samuel
Chase, George Plater, Charles Carroll, of Car-
rollton, Thomas Stone, James Forbes and John
Henry, esquires, or any two of them be dele-
gates to represent this state, in congress, for
anrl during the term of one year."

In 1778, William Carmichael and Mr. Smith,
were added to the delegation of Maryland.
