MARYLAND.

correct, punish, pardon, govern and rule,
as well in cases capital or criminal, as civil,
al! such as should inhabitants said countries;
to constitute laws and ordinances, as near
as may be however to the laws of England,
and not inconsistent with allegiance to the
sovereign thereof. Such was the general
tenor of the subsequent charters under
which this continent was colonized. Sir
Gilbert's enterprise was unfoitunate. He
died before a settlement was effected, and
his charter was considered as annulled.
1584—Six years after the date of the above
charter, a similar one was granted by Queen
Elizabeth to Sir Walter Raleigh. He des-
patched two small vessels under captain
Armidas and Barlow, who discovered the
coast of North Carolina on the 2d July.—
The flattering account given by them on
their return to England, hastened an expe-
dition of seven ships, which sailed under
command of Sir Richard Greenville, a con-
nexion of Sir Walter's, who brought out
the first English colony. One hundred and
eight persons under the government of
Ralph Lane, was left by him on the Island
of Roanoke, en the 25th August 1585.—
Disappointed of the hope of sudden riches,
which they had come in pursuit of, and
overtaken by famine, disease and division,
this colony at their own request was taken
back to England the next year, by Sir
