CHRONGLOGICAL EVENTS. 137

Francis Drake. The Chesapeake bay was
discovered by Lane before his departure.—
Soon after the departure of this Colony
Sir Richard Greenville arrivedfrotn England
with ample supplies. Having searched in
vain for the colony he had left, and totally
Unable to conjecture their fate, he placed
another small colony upon the same Island,
with provisions for two years, and set sail
for England. These last colonists were
soon destroyed by the natives.

1587.—Raleigh persevered notwithstanding
those disheartning incidents. Three ships,
better provided for the undertaking, and
having a greater number of men and some;
women on board, sailed under command
of John White, who was appointed Gover-
nor, and brought out a charter of incorpo-
ration for the colony They arrived at
Roanoke in July. Soon after their arrival,
the first chill born of English parents in
this country was added to the Colony: She
was the daughter of Annanias Dare, and
in token of the place of her birth was named
Virginia.

1589—Sir Walter Raleigh transfers his patent
to Sir Thomas Smith and others. White
returns the same year to England for sup-
plies for the Colony, which the war with
Spam prevented his reaching America with
until August 1590. The colony he hud left
were no where to be found—nor has the
