CHAP. XCVIII.

An ACT extending the time for taking the bond of the sheriff of
Montgomery county.

WHEREAS it is provided by an act of the general assembly, passed at November session, se-
venteen hundred and niniety-four, entitled, An act for the amendment of the law in certain
cases, that the sheriffs bonds shall hereafter be taken on some day between the eighth of October
and the first day of January in each year: And whereas Benjamin Ray, junior, the sheriff elect for
Montgomery county, hath mot entered into bond agreeable to the above recited act, therefore,

Preamble,


II. BE IT ENACTED, by the General Assembly of Maryland, That the time for talcing the bond of the
sheriff of Montgomery county be extended to the first day of February next, and that if the said
sheriff shall, at any time before or on the first day of February next, give a bond, agreeably to the
provisions of the said recited act, the said bond shall have the same effect, to all intents and pur-
poses, as if the said bond had been taken on or before the time prescribed by the said law.

CHAP. XCIX.

Time extended,
&c.

An ACT authorising a lottery to raise a sum of money for open-
ing and clearing the road to be opened from Westminster, in Fre-
derick county, to George-town and the city of Washington,

Passed 7th of
January, 1804.

BE IT ENACTED, by the General Assembly of Maryland, That it shall and may be lawful for Jacob
Shearman, of Frederick county, James Hood and Beal Owings, of Christopher, of Baltimore
county, cloctor Charles Alexander Warfield and Samuel Thomas, of Anne-Arundel county, and
Thomas Davis and Nathan Musgrove, of Montgomery county, or a majority of them, to propose a
scheme or schemes of a lottery, to raise a sum of money, not exceeding three thousand dollars, and
to sell and dispose of the tickets thereof; provided the said Jacob Shearman, James Hood, Beal
Owings, of Christopher, doctor Charles Alexander Warfield, Samuel Thomas, Thomas Davis and
Nathan Musgrove, or such majority of them as shall undertake to act, before the sale or dis-
posal of any ticket or tickets in said lottery, give their bond to the state of Maryland, in the pe-
nalty of eight thousand dollars, conditioned that they will well and truly apply so much of the
money arising therefrom, within six months after drawing said lottery shall commence, as will
satisfy the fortunate adventurers for prizes drawn by them, and after deducting the necessary ex-
pences incurred in said lottery, shall, within eighteen months from the time the drawing said lottery
shall commence, cause the said money to be laid out and expended in opening and clearing the road
from Westminster, in Frederick county, to George-town and the city of Washington, in the best
manner the sum raised will admit.

A scheme may

III. AND BE IT ENACTED, That it shall be the duty of said commissioners, or such majority as
may act, before they act as such, to lodge such bond in the clerk's office of the general court of the
western shore of this state, there to be recorded, and upon such bond, and upon any office copy
thereof, suit or suits may be instituted against the obligors therein, or any of them, or their legal
representatives, for any breach or non-compliance with the condition of the same

Bond to be
lodged, &c.

An ACT to enable Margaret Hammond and Harriet Hammond, of
Baltimore county, to erect a bridge across Patapsco river at a place
called Hammond's Ferry,

Passed 7th of
January, 1804.

WHEREAS it is represented to this general assembly, by Margaret Hammond and Harriet
Hammond, that they are possessed of a ferry on Patspsco river, which hath been used and
enjoyed for many years past by their predecessors, and that if proper encouragement was given, a
bridge might be erected over the said river, which would greatly facilitate the intercourse to and
from the city of Baltimore to many parts of the state: And whereas the said Margaret and Harriet
Hammond have proposed to erect the said bridge, of a sufficient width for carriages to pass and re-
pass at all times and seasons of the year, at their own expence, provided a law was passed enabling
