VOTES AND PROCEEDINGS, NOVEMBER SESSION, 1808. 71

The bill to repeal so much of the act, entitled, An act for erecting a village at Choptank bridge, in Caroline
county, and for other purposes, and the several supplements thereto, as prohibits the running at large of geese
and swine in said village, was read the second time, passed, and sent to the senate by the clerk.

The report of the committee on the petition of John Smith Brooks, was read the second time, the resolution
therein contained assented to, and sent to the senate by the clerk.

The bill to make public the road therein mentioned, was, read the second time, passed, and sent to the senate
by the clerk.

A petition from Thomas Gist, of Baltimore county, counter to the petition of Thomas Owings for a road,
was preferred and read.

Mr. Chapman, from the committee, delivers to the speaker a bill, entitled, An act to incorporate the conven-
tion of the Protestant episcopal church in Maryland; which was read the first time and ordered to lie on the table.

Mr. Dorsey, from the committee, delivers to the speaker the following report:

THE joint committee appointed on the subject of the finance report, that in their opinion it would be advise-
able to make the following investments of the money that will be in the treasury in January, 1809, to wit: The

sum of forty thousand dollars in the stock reserved in the Mechanics bank of Baltimore, the sum of five thou-
sand dollars in the stock reserved in the Farmers Bank of Maryland, and the sum of twenty thousand dollars in
the stock reserved in the Union Bank of Maryland. All which is respectfully submitted.

Which was read.

A petition from sundry inhabitants of Emmitsburgh, in Frederick county, praying for a lottery to raise a sum
of money to build a school-house, was preferred, read, and referred to Mr.. Baer, Mr. Sappington and Mr. J.
Thomas, to consider and report thereon.

Mr. Baer, from the committee, delivers to the speaker a bill, entitled, An act authorising a lottery to erect
suitable buildings for a school-house for the accommodation of the youth of Emmitsburgh, and its vicinity, in
Frederick county; which was read the first and second time by especial order, passed, and sent to the senate
by the clerk.

ORDERED, That the bill authorising the levy court of Baltimore county to appoint commissioners to lay. out
a road therein mentioned, be recommitted tor amendment.

The supplement to the act. entitled. An act authorising the drawing of a lottery for the benefit of the college
of medicine of Maryland, and the bill to continue certain ads at assembly, were read the second time, passed,
and sent to the senate by the clerk.

The house resumed the consideration of the bill to build a bridge over Tuckahoe creek where the old bridge
now stands, and the question was put. That the following be added to said bill? to wit: " And be it enacted,
That the line dividing Talbot and Queen Anne's counties shall be extended from the north west side of Tucka-
hoe creek, where the old bridge formerly stood, running by and with said creek to the present bridge. " De-
termined in the negative.

The question was then put, That the further consideration of the same be referred to the next general assem-
bly of Maryland? Determined in the negative.

The question was then put, Snail the said bill pass? The yeas and nays being required, appeared as follow:

Mr. Sanders, from the committee, delivers to the speaker a bill, entitled, A supplement to the act, entitled,
An act to confirm and make public a certain road therein mentioned; which was read the first time and ordered
to lie on the table.
Mr. Chapman, from the committee, delivers to the speaker the following report:

THE committee to whom was referred the petition, of Michael M'Can, report, that they have considered
the same, and find from sufficient testimony, that the petitioner served as a soldier in the Maryland line from
the fifth of June, one thousand seven hundred and seventy-seven, to the conclusion of the war; that he is now

about seventy years of age, very poor and infirm, without being able to procure a livelihood; they therefore
recommend the following resolution:

RESOLVED, That the treasurer of the western shore be and he is hereby authorised and directed to pay to
Michael M'Can, late a soldier in the Maryland line of the revolutionary army, a sum of money, annually, in
quarterly payments, equal to the half pay of a soldier. All which is submitted.
