houses of the legislature, be declared duly elected directors, on the part of this state, in the Union Bank of
Maryland.

A petition from James Somervell, and others, of the city of Baltimore, counter to the petition of Louis
Barbarin, was preferred, read, and referred to the committee appointed on petitions for acts of insolvency.
The house adjourns until to-morrow morning 9 o'clock.

WEDNESDAY, November 20, 1805,

THE house met. Present the same members as on yesterday. The proceedings of yesterday were read.
Mr. Joshua Prideaux, a delegate returned for Worcester county, appeared, and after qualifying in the mode

prescribed by the constitution and form of government, and taking an oath to support the constitution of the
United States, took his seat in the house.

Mr. Ellicott, from the committee, delivers to the speaker a bill, entitled, An act to change the names of Jacob
Sedgwick, Matthias Sedgwick, George Sedgwick and Christian Sedgwick, to the names of Jacob Adreon, Matthias
Adreon, George Adreon and Christian Adreon; which was read the first time and ordered to lie on the table.

Mr. Van-Horn, from the committee, delivers to the speaker the following report:

THE committee to whom was referred the petition of John Crow, and others, report, that they have had
the same under consideration, and find that the building of a bridge at the place proposed by the petitioners,
would be attended with considerable expence, and that the benefit resulting to the public would be compara-
tively small, they are therefore of opinion that the prayer of the petitioners ought not to be granted.

By order, L. GASSAWAY, clk.
Which was read.

Mr. James Scott, a delegate returned for Kent county, appeared, and after qualifying in the mode prescribed
by the constitution and form of government, and taking an oath to support the constitution of the United
States, took his seat in the house.

The house proceeded to ballot for a director in the Bank of Baltimore in behalf of the state for the ensuing
year; the ballots being deposited in the ballot box, the gentlemen named to strike retired, and after sometime
returned and reported, that James L. Hawkins was elected.

Whereupon RESOLVED, That James L. Hawkins be, and he is hereby declared to be, the director on the
part of the state in the Bank of Baltimore.

Mr. Frazier, from the committee, delivers to the speaker a bill, entitled, An act to authorise and empower
Samuel Hooper, of Dorchester county, to convey the tract of land therein mentioned; which was read the
first time and ordered to lie on the table.

A petition from James Boarman, of Charles county, praying to be indulged in the payment of a balance due
by him to the state, was preferred, read, and referred to Mr. Stuart, Mr. McPherson and Mr. Chapman, to
consider and report thereon.

A petition from a number of the citizens of the western precincts of Baltimore, and of the city of Baltimore,
praying that a law may pass appointing commissioners to make rules and regulations for promoting the well be-
ing and good order of the market in said precincts, and to erect in the market space hay-scales, subject to such re-
gulations as may hereafter be ordained by the corporation of the city of Baltimore, was preferred, read, and refer-
red to Mr. Lemmon, Mr. Ellicott, Mr. Ogden, Mr. Stephen and Mr. Harryman, to consider and report thereon.

A petition from John Pennington, of Queen-Anne's county, praying an act of insolvency, was preferred,
read, and referred to the committee appointed on petitions of a similar nature.

tee to prepare and bring in the same.

On motion, Leave given to bring in a bill, entitled, An act to provide for the election of commissioners by
the people to settle and ascertain the public taxes in each county in this state, and for other purposes. OR-
DERED, That Mr. Ogden, Mr. Montgomery, Mr. Shaaff, Mr. Stephen, Mr. Ellicott, Mr. Plater and Mr.
Mercer, be a committee to prepare and bring in the same.

On motion, Leave given to bring in a bill, entitled, An aft to authorise the judges of the general court to
send causes to their respective counties for trial, to facilitate the taking the depositions of witnesses, and to
prevent the removal of causes for delay from the county courts to the general court, and for the regulation of
fees in the general court, chancery court and court of appeals. ORDERED, That Mr. Chapman, Mr. Scott,
Mr. Stephen, Mr. Montgomery and Mr. Shaaff, be a committee to prepare and bring in the same.

On motion, Leave given to bring in a bill, entitled, An act to withdraw the funds from Washington and St.
John's colleges, and subject the same to the appropriation of the legislature. ORDERED, That Mr. Montgomery,
Mr. Stephen, Mr. Somervell, Mr. Lemmon and Mr. Van-Horn, be a committee to prepare and bring in the same.

The report of the committee on the petition of Frederick Green, was read the second time and the resolution
therein contained assented to; which was sent to the senate by the clerk.

A petition from Andrew Hamilton, of Prince-George's county, stating, that he purchased at a sheriff's sale
a tract of land called Hamilton's Purchase, that the sheriff died without making any return of the writ, or
