CHAPTER 296

Passed Mar 20 1835

An act to limit and define the Jurisdiction of Justices of
the Peace

Jurisdiction on all

sums under $50

Section 1 Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Mary
land, That from henceforth, the justices of the peace shall
have jurisdiction over, and may take cognizance of all cases
whatever, where the debt or damges laid or claimed shall

Except

not exceed the sura of fifty dollars except in cases or ac
tions of slander, assault, and battery, and in cases or actions
where the title to lands shall or may come in question,
Provided, that nothing in this, act shall be construed to ex
tend to the city of Baltinore

Appeals allowed

Sec 2 And be it enacted, That an appeal may be taken
to the County Court from any judgment of the justice of
the peace, rendered by virtue of this act, in the same man
ner, and in the same time, as in cases of appeals from the
judgments of a justice of the peace rendered by virtue of
any other law of this State

CHAPTER 297

Passed Mar. 21, 1835

An act to divorce Henrietta Morris, of Charles County, from
her husband, James Morns

Divorce

Section 1 Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Ma
ryland, That Henrietta Morris, of Charles county, be hence
forth divorced from bed, board, and mutual cohabitation
with her husband, James Morris

Guardianship

Sec 3 And be it enacted, That said Henrietta Morris
be, and she is hereby declared, entitled to the guardianship
of her children by James Morris

Sec 3 And be it enacted, That hereafter the said Hen-
rietta shall be deemed and taken to be, to every effect, in
tent, and purpose, a feme sole, save only that during the
life of her said husband, she shall not be authorised to
marry again.
