CHAPTER 16.

Passed Jan, 20, 1835

An act for the relief of the German Reformed and Lutheran
Congregations of Salem Church, in Boonsborough, Wash-
ington county.

Preamble.

WHEREAS, it is represented to this General Assembly, by
the petition of sundry members of the German Reformed
and Lutheran Congregations of Salem Church, in Boons-
borough, Washington county, that the church regulations,
adopted by the said congregations on the twelfth day of Au-
gust, eighteen hundred and eighteen, in conformity with the
provisions of the act of Assembly, passed at November ses-
sion, eighteen hundred and two, chapter three, entitled, "an
act to incorporate certain persons in every christian church
or congregation in this State, " do come in conflict with the
provisions of the constitutions adopted by the synods of the
respective churches above named; and whereas, the said
members have, petitioned for legislative aid, and it seems
just and right that redness should be afforded them — There-
fore:

Section 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Ma-
ryland, That the elders and deacons of the German Reform-
ed and Lutheran Congregation of Salem Church, in Boons-
borough, Washington county, at present in office, together
with such others as may be added to their number and their

successors, be and they are hereby constituted a body poli-
tic and corporate, by the name of "The Vestries of Salem
Church, in Boonsborough, " and by that name shall have per-
petual succession, may sue and be sued, and have and use a
common seal, with power to purchase, receive and hold,
they and their successors, any lands, tenements, rents, goods
and chattels of what kind soever, which may be purchased,
derived or given to them for the use of the said congrega-
tions, and to lease, rent, or otherwise dispose of the same in
such manner as to them shall seem most conclusive to the in-
terest of the said congregations: Provided, that the said
corporation shall not at any one time hold or posses property,
real, personal, or mixed, exceeding in total value the sum of
ten thousand dollars.

Sec. 2. And be it enacted, That the said congregations
shall hold a joint ownership in the church property, the
land and buildings of the said congregations, and that so long
as they shall mutually hold the said property jointly, each
congregation shall contribute, an equal amount for all repairs
