            THOMAS KING CARROLL, ESQ. GOVERNOR.                                                                                                            1829.

eighteen hundred and twenty-nine, that certain docket and record
books of said office are in a dilapidated state, therefore,
  CHAP. 125.  
    Section 1.  Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Maryland,
That Stevenson Archer and Thomas Kell, two of the
judges of Harford county court, and Otho Scott, esquire, be,
and they are hereby appointed commissioners to inspect the
records belonging to the office of the clerk of Harford county
court, and to ascertain what record books belonging to said
office require to be transcribed, or require new indexes and
new binding; and if upon examination they the said commissioners,
or a majority of them, shall find that any of the said
records, anterior to the time when the present clerk was appointed,
require transcribing or new indexes, or that any record
books in said office require rebinding, they shall be, and
are hereby authorised and empowered to contract with
said clerk, or some other person, for the faithful transcribing
of the same, under the direction of the clerk; and the same,
when done and executed to be preserved as record books in
the office of the said clerk of Harford county, and any extracts,
exemplifications or copies, from the said record books, as
transcribed under the hand of the clerk, and seal of his office,
as the case may be, shall be legal evidence in the several
courts of this state, in as full and ample manner as if the
same had been extracted from the original record books, of
which the said records are a transcript.
Persons to inspect,
contract and direct.
    Sec. 2.  And be it enacted, That the said clerk shall purchase
such books, bound with leather, as the said commissioners,
or a majority of them, may direct, for the purpose of
transcribing and annexing new indexes to the said record
books.
Purchase books.
    Sec. 3.  And be it enacted, That the said clerk, or any other
person that the said commissioners may employ, shall be allowed
such sum or sums for transcribing said dockets, and record
books, and indexes, as the said commissioners, in their
discretion, shall think he therefore reasonably may deserve
for the same, to be levied by the commissioners of Harford
county, and collected and paid as other county charges
in said county are collected and paid; Provided, that the allowance
so awarded by the commissioners aforesaid, shall not exceed
eight cents for each and every side of one hundred words
of recording, and ten cents per side of one hundred words
for making indexes.
    Compensation—
levy.
    Sec. 4.  And be it enacted, That the price or amount of such
book or books as shall be furnished by the said clerk for transcribing
such dockets and records as may by the said commissioners
be thought necessary, be levied by the commissioners
for Harford county, and collected and paid to the said
clerk, as other county charges in said county are collected and
paid; Provided, that if the commissioners before named shall
be of opinion that any of the said dockets or record books
