CHAP. 102.

said act: AND WHEREAS, it was provided in said
act, that the
said Commissioners should have power and authority to appoint
a bailiff, whose duty it should be to collect any sum or
sums of money, levied and assessed by the said Commissioners,
on the taxable inhabitants of said town, in the manner
prescribed by said act: AND WHEREAS, by an act passed at
December session eighteen hundred and twenty-four, chapter
one hundred and thirty, entitled, an act to repeal the act passed
at December session eighteen hundred and fifteen, hereinbefore
mentioned, and the supplements thereto, and for other
purposes, the bailiff appointed by virtue of the act of December
session eighteen hundred and fifteen, hereinbefore mentioned,
was not authorised or empowered to collect any sum or
sums of money, levied and assessed by the Commissioners
aforesaid, unless a levy list was placed in the hands of said
bailiff by the said commissioners, before the passage of said
act of December session eighteen hundred and twenty-four:
AND WHEREAS, John Hogeland and Jonathan Hogeland have
claims against the commissioners aforesaid, for grading and
paving Mechanick-street, in the town of Cumberland, and
are without remedy, save by the interposition of this General
Assembly: Therefore,

to adjust,
settlement pay—levy
and collect.
Appoint bailiff.

Section 1. Be it enacted by
the General Assembly of Maryland,
That Roger Perry, Gustavus Beall and Joseph Everstine,
of the town of Cumberland, or a majority of them, shall
have full power and authority to settle and adjust the account
of the said John Hogeland and Jonathan Hogeland, for paving
and grading Mechanick-street, in the town of Cumberland,
from the lower end thereof, to Bridge-street, and to pay the
same, and to appoint a bailiff to collect any sum or sums of
money which they may levy and assess for the purpose aforesaid;
and the said Roger Perry, Gustavus Beall and Joseph
Everstine, or a majority of them, and the bailiff to be by them
appointed by virtue of this act, shall have the same powers
and authorities, to all intents and purposes, as if the act of
December session, eighteen hundred and twenty-four, chapter
one hundred and thirty, hereinbefore mentioned, had not been
passed.

CHAPTER 103.
An act to reduce the allowance of the Sheriff of Montgomery
County, for keeping prisoners in gaol, and finding them victuals,
and for other purposes.

Section 1. Be it enacted by
the General Assembly of Maryland,
That from and after the passage of this act, it shall be
lawful for the Sheriff of Montgomery county to ask, demand,
