good latches, or other convenient fastening, to said gate or
gates as aforesaid, and also shall keep that part of the said
road they occupy in good order and repair, so as to impede
as little as possible persons travelling with carriages of plea-
sure or burthen.

CHAP. 12G.

Sec. 2. Aid be it enacted, That if any person or per-
sons, after the passage of this act, shall cut down, wilfully
leave open or remove, any of the said gates, they shall, upon
conviction thereof before a justice of the peace, forfeit and

more than five dollars for every such offence, to be recover-
ed as small debts are out of court.

Sec. 3. And be it enacted, That if any slave shall cut
down, destrov, injure, or wilfully leave open, any or either
of the gates aforesaid, which shall have been, or may be set up
or kept by virtue of this act, such slave shall be punished lor
every such offence,on conviction thereof before a justice of the
peace by the oath of one or more witnesses, by whipping,
in the discretion of said justice, not exceeding for each of-

fence the number of ten lashes, Provided always, that the

behalf, may redeem said slave so convicted, from such pu-
nishment, by the payment of the fine, to the owner of such
gate or gates, imposed by this act upon free persons for like
offences; And provided also, that no free citizen shall be
fined, or slave punished, under the provisions of this act, in
any case whereon such gate or gates shall be found carelessly
standing open, or not hung upon good iron hinges, or ether-
wise in bad order and repair.

An Act for the Compensation of the Judges of Baltimore Coun-
ty Court.

Sec. 1. Be.it enacted by the General Assembly of Ma-
required of the judges of Baltimore county court, by an
act, entitled, An act for the despatch of business in Balti-
more county court, there shall be paid by the treasurer of
the western shore, out of the monies received by him from
the clerk of Baltimore county court, under the eighth sec-
tion of the said act, to each of the said judges, the sum of
eight hundred dollars annually, by quarterly payments, in
addition to their salaries as established by an act passed at
November session eighteen hundred and five, entitled, An

act to establish permanent salaries for the judges of the ju-
dicial districts of this state; Provided the amount so paid
over to the treasurer by the clerk as aforesaid shall be suffi-
