WHEREAS, The National Old Trails Road Association, after
careful investigation, has approved and adopted the old
"National Road," which ran from Georgetown, now in the
District of Columbia, to Cumberland, Maryland, and thence
westward over the old Cumberland Road, as one of the roads
in the National Old Trails Road system; and
WHEREAS, The said old National Road running from the
said Georgetown to and through Cumberland to the boundary
line between the State of Maryland and the State of Pennsyl-
vania, runs through the principal points upon, and in most
places co-incides exactly with, the roadway over which Gen-
eral Edward Braddock and his army marched in 1755, on
their way to Fort Du Quesne, and is known as Braddock's
Road, and
WHEREAS, The said road is now a part of the system of
improved State Highways running through and connecting
the Counties of Montgomery, Frederick, Washington, Alle-
gany and Garrett, and is recognized, not only as one of the
finest highways in the East, but as one of the roads richest
in historical interest by reason of the many places thereon
connected with the earliest history of our State and Country;
and
WHEREAS, The Daughters of the American Revolution lo-
cated in the several States through which this historic road,
and its almost equally historic extensions through the Middle
West and Far West, have been engaged for years in the
laudable purpose of preserving for posterity the history of
the said old roads, and of the places of historic interest along
the same, by signing or marking, of said old roads and the
erection of markers and monuments thereon and at places
of particular interest along the same; and
WHEREAS, The Daughters of the American Revolution with-
in the State of Maryland have already erected along said
road several monuments to mark the places of historic interest
thereon, which work they propose to continue until all such
places are so marked ; and have also marked certain portions
of said road with their National Old Trails Road sign, indica-
ting to travelers thereon the historic interest and significance
of said road, but have not the necessary funds to continue
marking said road unassisted; and
