CHAPTER 285.

Passed Mar. 21,
1837.

An act to regulate the charges for the use of Hackney
Carriages, in the City of Baltimore.

Hacks defined,

SECTION 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of
Maryland, That every carriage, coach, or other ve-
hicle, moved by horses, or other animal power, which
shall be used for Ihc conveyance of persons within the
city of Baltimore, for hire or compensation, shall be
deemed a Hackney Carriage within the meaning of
this net.

When licensed

&c.

SEC. 2. And be it enacted, That every owner of a
hackney carriage, who shall have obtained a licence
therefor as required by the present or any future or-
dinances of Hie Mayor and City Council of Baltimore,
shall be authorised and entitled, during the time in

such licence specified, to charge, ask and receive as a
compensation from every person using the same, the
rates of fare and compensation, and hire, and no more
to be fixed and determined by virtue of tliis act.

SEC. 3. And. be it enacted, That the Mayor of the
city of Baltimore, be, and he is hereby authorized to
appoint three persons residents of the city of Balti-
more commissioners, who or a majority of whom, shall
fix and determine the rates of fare, hire, or compen-
sation, for the use of hackney carriages within the city
of Baltimore, for transportation of passengers and

baggage, and of cither, adopting at discretion scales
of time and distance or of distance only; and such
distance to be indicated by fixed points or lines in the
said city, and such rates when determined as aforesaid,

shall be certified under the hands and seals of the said
commissioners to the Mayor of said city who shall file
the same, and cause the said certificate to be recorded
in the office of the register of said city, and shall cause

the same to be published daily for at least four weeks
in all the daily newspapers of said city, and if the said
Mayor shall for the space of sixty days after the pas-
sage of this act, fail to appoint commissioners as afore-
