THOMAS W. VEAZEY, ESQUIRE, GOVERNOR.

1836.

Westminster, bringing their respective polls, or num-
ber of votes each candidate shall have received, and -
shall then and there make a full and perfect statement
or return of the said election, therein setting forth the
number of votes each candidate shall have received,
and the same shall sign, seal and transmit to the Ex-
ecutive of Maryland forthwith, by some safe and expe-
ditious means, and the, said judges shall make and
keep a true and perfect copy of the said full statement
or return, until a clerk of Carroll county shall be ap-
pointed, to whom the same shall be delivered within
twenty days after his appointment.

HAP. 180.

SEC. 4. And be it enacted, That the voters of Car-
roll county, be, and they are hereby authorised and di-
rected to attend the said election, and to vote for sher-
iffs in the usual manner, by ballot, that is to say, for
two persons for the office of sheriff for Carrll county,
the one of whom having a plurality of votes, or if both
have an equal number, either of them at the discretion
of the Governor to be commissioned by the Governor

for said office, and in case of death, refusal, resigna-
tion, disqualification, or removal out of the county,
before the expiration of the time in the fifth section of
this act limited, the other person chosen as aforesaid,
shall be commissioned by the Governor to execute the
said office for the residue of said time, and in case of
his death, refusal, resignation, disqualification or re-
moval out of the county, before the expiration of the
said time, the Governor, with the advice of Council,
may nominate and commission a fit and proper person
to execute the said office, for the residue of the said
time.

SEC. 5. And be it enacted, That the sheriffs who
shall he elected as aforesaid, shall serve until the first
Monday of October, in the year eighteen hundred and
thirty-nine, and until the qualification of the sheriff
who may then be elected as the sheriff of other counties
are.

SEC. 6. And be it enacted, That the person who shall
receive the highest number of votes for the office of
sheriff, as aforesaid, before he shall become qualified to
act, shall give bond within thirty days after his com-
mission, in the manner and for the time prescribed by
law, for the regulation of sheriffs' bonds; and that the
